ugh this is all in caps because of reasons that I am too lazy to fix. So yep. My first Howrra fic.
STORY TIME, YOU SAY? UNVEIL THE ANGST:: THE TELEVISION (ANOTHER SATO INVENTION) WAS NEW FOR THE SOUTH POLE. HOWL WASN’T REALLY SURE WHY THERE WERE GUARDS STILL STATIONED AT THE SOUTH POLE, BUT HE SUSPECTED IT WAS TO LOOK AFTER MASTER KATARA IN HER OLD AGE, WITHOUT TIPPING HER OFF.
WHATEVER REASON HOWL WAS STILL EMPLOYED, HE WAS JUST GLAD THERE WAS ENOUGH MONEY COMING IN THAT HE AND SOME OF THE OTHER GUARDS COULD AFFORD TO BUY A TV. ESPECIALLY TODAY. TODAY, AVATAR KORRA WAS MAKING A SPEECH ABOUT THE RECENT DESTRUCTION OF THE REPUBLIC CITY PRO-BENDING ARENA, AND THE BATTLE AGAINST THE EQUALISTS THAT HAD CAUSED IT.
HOWL AND THE OTHERS GATHERED IN THE BREAK ROOM, AND HUDDLED AROUND THE TV, SITUATED NEAR THE FIRE TO WARD OFF THE COLD. HOWL WAS EARLY, AND SEATED HIMSELF IN THE BEST SPOT, GIVING HIM THE CLEAREST VIEW OF THE TV. AN AD FOR SATOMOBILES, SHOWING A YOUNG CURLY-HAIRED GIRL DRIVING WHILE LAUGHING WITH HER HUSBAND, PLAYED ACROSS THE SCENE AS HOWL WAITED ANXIOUSLY, HAND KNOTTING IN HIS ROBE’S SLEEVE. HE WAS GOING TO SEE KORRA. HE WAS GOING TO SEE KORRA AGAIN.
FOG (FEMALE ORDER GUARD) AND SOMEOF HOWL’S FRIENDS FINALLY ARRIVED, LAUGHING LOUDLY ABOUT HOW SOMEONE HAD BEEN ATTACKED BY AN OTTER-PENGUIN. HOWL RESISTED THE URGE TO SCREAM AT THEM TO “SHUT UP! KORRA! KORRA WILL BE HERE!” AND INSTEAD FIXED THEM WITH A FIERCE GLARE, BITING HIS TONGUE. ONLY FOG NOTICED, AND WITH A PITY-FILLED SMILE URGED THE OTHERS TO THEIR SEATS, HUSHING THEM AS THE SPEECH BEGAN.
AND THERE SHE WAS. KORRA, WHO HE HADN’T SEEN FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS, STOOD TALK AND CONFIDENT BEFORE THE PODIUM, FLANKED BY TENZIN, CHEIF BEI FONG, AND TWO YOUNG MEN HOWL DIDN’T RECOGNIZE. HE FELT HIS HACKLES RAISE AS KORRA BEGAN TO SPEAK, DETAILING HOW SHE’D RISKED HER LIFE TO DRIVE OUT THE EQUALISTS AND SAVE THE CITY. SHE’D BEEN IN DANGER, AND HE’D BEEN SITTING HERE.
THE YOUNG MEN BEHIND KORRA EXCHANGED MEANINGFUL GLANCES. THEY’D BEEN THERE. THEY KNEW WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT. IT WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE HOWL SCREAM, BUT HE RESISTED, KNOTTING HIS HANDS IN THE HEM OF HIS ROBE AGAIN. MAKING HIMSELF IGNORE THEM, HE FOCUSED ON KORRA, AND DRANK HER IN. HER BEAUTIFUL COLORED SKIN SHONE, EVEN IF THE COLOUR WAS MISSING. HER HAIR, A FEW SHADES DARKER, WAS PULLED BACK HASTILY, AS IF SHE’D HAD MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO. HER EYES, GREY AS THEY WERE, SHONE WITH LIFE.
SHE FINISHED SPEAKING, A WIDE SMILE IN HER FACE AS THE CROWD WENT WILD, AND HOWL REALISED HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT SHE’D BEEN SAYING AS THE OTHER GUARDS CLAPPED AND HOOTED LOUDLY. HE SIMPLY STARED AT KORRA, WANTING TO SEE HER FOR ONE MORE MOMENT, AND SOMETHING INSIDE HIM TWISTED AS HE REALISED IN A FEW SHORT MOMENTS SHE’D BE GONE AGAIN.
KORRA STEPPED BACK FROM THE PODIUM, MUTTERING SOMETHING TO TENZIN THAT MADE HIS EYEBROWS RISE, AND FOR THE SHORTER OF THE TWO BOYS TO CHUCKLE. THE TALLER ONE, WITH THE SCARF, STEPPED FORWARD TO SCOLD KORRA. IT WAS SOMETHING HOWL HIMSELF HAD DONE A MILLION TIMES, SO HE SMILED FONDLY, LOST IN MEMORIES. THEN, RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM, HIS HEART BROKE.
KORRA REACHED OUT AND PULLED THE TALLER MAN TO HER, AND YANKED HIM DOWN TO HER LIPS BY GRASPING HIS SCARF. HOWL IGNORED THE MAN’S EYES WIDEN, SAW HIS SHOCKED FACE, AND FOCUSED ON THE SICKENING FEELING INSIDE HIM AS KORRA KISSED THE MAN ON THE LIPS ON TV, TO THE CHEERS OF THE AUDIENCE. HE STUMBLED TO HIS FEET, AND RACED OUT OF THE BREAK ROOM, INTO THE SNOW OUTSIDE.
FOG WATCHED HIM GO, HER OWN HEART BREAKING. SHE’D JUST COME BACK FROM SERVING ON AIR TEMPLE ISLAND, AND FROM HOWL’S INCESSANT QUESTIONS, SHE’D REALISED THAT HOWL WAS STILL IN LOVE WITH THE YOUNG LADY AVATAR. DESPITE ALL ATTEMPTS BY HER, HE WAS OBLIVIOUS TO FOG’S OWN FEELINGS AND ADVANCES. SO, LIKE THE GOOD FRIEND SHE WAS, SHE GOT UP TO GO OUTSIDE AND COMFORT HOWL AND HIS BROKEN HEART.
Also a bonus bit because all the asks keep telling me to go away:
Korra laughed, watching Mako’s face go redder and redder, as the crowd’s cheers became close to deafening. Bolin was patting her on the back, and she glimpsed Cheif Bei Fong smiling slightly as she held Tenzin back from killing someone on national television.
National television. People were watching her from all over the world. A memory of a tall White Lotus guard with a kind face and a penchant for romantic novels flitted into her mind, but she brushed it aside. Her life was here now, and she had someone here to share it with.
She took Mako’s hand, and smiled at him as he stared at her with shocked eyes, a slight smile on her face. Yes, she definitely had someone to share it with.
Fog followed Howl out into the snow, and saw him kneeling in the centre of the courtyard. He was hugging himself pitifully, and was shaking slightly, though Fog suspected not from the cold.
She approached, and laid a soft hand on his shoulder. He started, and looked up at her with wounded brown eyes, ringed with red. Frozen tears dropped down his face, and he bit his lips to stop a sob escaping.
Fog knelt next to him, and hugging him, whispering soft words of comfort as her own heart broke as she sat right next to the man who would never love her.
